Surfing is one of the most exhilarating sports, combining physical endurance with a deep connection to the ocean. Playing with the waves is for all and everyone as much as you feel comfortable into the water and know how to swim. A beginner surf session is a strong base to your surf adventure.
Our surf school – Adrenalin Surf Maroc – provides wetsuits, boards and transportation based on weather conditions and levels. Groups are maximum 5 students per instructor.
Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens during a two-hour introductory surf lesson with Adrenalin Surf Maroc.
1. Introduction and Safety Briefing to beginner surf lesson
A beginner surf session always starts on the beach with an introduction to surfing basics and a safety briefing.
Your instructor will cover a blend of :
– Understanding the ocean: waves, tides, and currents, in general and more specifically about the surf spot you will be testing
– Surfboard anatomy: parts of the surfboard, like the nose, tail, rails, leash and fins
– Surf etiquette: the unwritten rules to keep everyone safe, such as right of way
Safety is crucial to understanding what to do and what to avoid while in the water.
2. Warm-Up and Stretching
Before hitting the waves, you’ll do a warm-up to get your muscles ready. Surfing requires full-body engagement, so expect a combination of:
– Dynamic stretching: Movements to loosen up your arms, legs, and back, which are heavily used in paddling and balancing on the board.
– Light cardio: A short jog or some jumping jacks might be included to elevate your heart rate.
This warm-up is essential to prevent injuries and to prepare your body for the physical demands of surfing.
3. Training on the sand
You’ll the practice the basic techniques on the beach before getting in the water. This includes:
– Lying correctly on the board and Paddling
– Pop-Up Technique
– Stance and balance
This part of the lesson ensures that when you hit the water, you have the muscle memory to apply what you’ve learned. Practice and repetition is key even if it can be frustrating as at this stage you still have hit the ocean !
4. Entering the Water and Practicing
With your newfound knowledge through the beginner surf session, it’s time to get in the water. Here’s what to expect:
– Paddling Out: Depending on conditions, you might start in the whitewater, where broken waves make it easier for beginners.
– Catching Waves: Under your instructor’s supervision, you’ll practice catching waves. They’ll help you time your paddling and give you a push if needed to catch your first few waves.
– Pop-Up Practice:Once you catch a wave, it’s time to pop up! Don’t worry if you don’t get it right away—this takes practice. Your instructor will offer tips and encouragement after each attempt.
– Riding the Wave: If you manage to stand up, even for a moment, you’ll experience the thrill of riding a wave. The goal in your first session is to get a feel for the motion and balance, not necessarily to ride waves all the way to shore.
5. Wrap-Up and Feedback to your beginner surf lesson
The last part of your session involves paddling back to shore and gathering for a brief recap on your experience, answering your questions and define the next steps for your surf adventure.
Final Thoughts
Your first surf session is all about getting comfortable with the water, the board, and the basic movements. It’s common to feel a bit overwhelmed at first, but remember that surfing is as much about patience and persistence as it is about skill. Each wave you catch (or miss) is a step towards becoming a better surfer. Enjoy the process, stay safe, and most importantly, have fun!
